Pompeii opens its doors to young restorers and transforms into a vast open-air laboratory. An agreement signed between the Archaeological Park, Ales SpA, and the Botticino Restoration School will allow fourteen students from the degree program in Restoration of Cultural Heritage to complete a seven-week internship, with a total commitment of 250 hours each.

The students will be supported by experts from Ales, the Ministry of Culture's in-house company, which has been working in Pompeii for years on the site's conservation and scheduled maintenance. A multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, architects, restorers, engineers, and workers, in constant contact with Park officials, will work side by side with the students, offering them a unique learning experience on archaeological heritage.

Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel emphasized the importance of the initiative: "One of the Park's primary missions is the protection and conservation of its heritage. Training professionals who will be responsible for the daily care of Pompeii is essential, and the site represents an exceptional experimental field where top-level skills are put into practice every day."

For future restorers, it will be a unique opportunity to observe mosaics, frescoes, and wall structures up close, and help keep them intact for future generations.

It's great that young people can do an internship in Pompeii, but there should have been more than fourteen students to get more support. I hope there are more similar opportunities in the future.
