Naples – Yet another robbery in the city center. Once again, the crime scene was Corso Umberto I , where last night a 29-year-old man of Moroccan origin was stopped by State Police after violently snatching a woman's cell phone.
The episode is not an isolated case, but is part of an alarming crime pattern that has plagued one of the city's main arteries for months, transforming a place of promenade and commerce into a high-risk area for tourists and residents.
The story of what happened is almost a familiar one. Officers from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station, during a patrol, noticed the 29-year-old acting quickly and violently on the corner of Via Fazzini.
After attacking the victim and grabbing her smartphone, the robber attempted a desperate escape. The police, however, intervened quickly, chasing and apprehending the fugitive a few meters away. The stolen cell phone was recovered and immediately returned to its rightful owner, who was still in shock over the incident.
The robber, already known to the police, was arrested on charges of robbery and resisting a public official.
The shadow of robberies: an endemic problem and citizen outrage
This arrest, although effective, is not enough to reassure the citizens and shopkeepers of Corso Umberto I. Robberies, particularly those of watches and cell phones, have become a recurring plague.
The area, one of the most popular with tourists arriving from the Central Station, has become a prime target for gangs of robbers, often young and with criminal records, who take advantage of the chaos and crowding to hit and run.
The phenomenon has generated a wave of indignation and concern. Residents are demanding increased patrols and a greater police presence, complaining of a sense of insecurity that undermines the neighborhood's livability.
The accounts are pouring in: from tourists robbed to residents attacked in broad daylight. Yesterday's incident isn't just a news story, but a symbol of an emergency that requires concrete responses and a more robust prevention strategy to restore the peace of mind residents and visitors deserve.
The effectiveness of yesterday's police intervention, while commendable, highlights a bitter reality: the need for constant and widespread action to combat a phenomenon that, unfortunately, seems to have taken root in one of the city's symbolic places.

What's happening in Naples is truly unacceptable. People's safety should be a priority. Law enforcement must do more; simply arresting a robber isn't enough if things continue as they were before.
