Sorrento – Two young people, a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old, have been placed under precautionary measures as part of an investigation by the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office and the Naples Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.
The ordinances, carried out this morning by the Carabinieri of the Sorrento Company, ordered the adult to be held in prison and the minor to be placed in a community facility. Both are seriously suspected of improper robbery and aggravated fraud, which occurred last April on the Sorrento Peninsula, targeting seniors in their eighties and nineties.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the first episode dates back to April 14, 2025. A ninety-year-old couple from Sorrento received a phone call from a self-styled Carabinieri marshal who warned them of an alleged imminent theft, suggesting they hand over the family jewels to an arriving "colleague."
Shortly thereafter, one of the scammers showed up at the elderly couple's home, identifying himself as a soldier. The woman, convinced, handed over the valuables. But when her husband attempted to fight back and retrieve the stolen goods, he was pushed by the man, who managed to escape with the loot.
The second incident occurred on April 18th, again in Sorrento. This time, a 96-year-old woman fell into the trap. The two suspects, still posing as Carabinieri, approached her and told her that her son had hit a pedestrian and that they needed money immediately to avoid legal trouble.
They took the table away from an old lady because she was keeping money in a secret compartment that they couldn't open.
The elderly, in a state of agitation, indicated that the savings were kept in a hidden compartment in the dining table, but explained that he was unable to open it. At that point, the criminals decided to take the entire table away, loading it into their car and disappearing.
The investigation, coordinated by the competent prosecutors' offices and conducted by the Sorrento Carabinieri, was based on the analysis of video surveillance footage and cross-examination of investigative evidence. According to investigators, these elements created a solid evidence base, aggravated by the use of a minor in the criminal activities and the particular vulnerability of the victims.
After the formal procedures were completed, the 20-year-old was taken to prison, while the 16-year-old was placed in a community care facility. Both remain at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
