Sant'Anastasia – More bloodshed in the streets, another argument escalating into gunfire. After the shooting that had already shaken the Vesuvius area this morning, a new case was closed within hours with the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
Carabinieri from the local station, along with colleagues from the Castello di Cisterna Operations and Mobile Unit, arrested Luigi Gifuni, 59, a construction contractor already known to law enforcement, almost red-handed. He is considered a serious suspect in the attempted murder of Damiano Romano, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
According to investigators' reconstruction, Gifuni approached the victim on the street to settle old grudges stemming from petty arguments. After slapping him in the face, he pulled out his gun and fired at close range, then fled.
Romano was immediately assisted by his wife and taken to Villa Betania Hospital in Naples, where he remains hospitalized with a critical prognosis. Despite the severity of his wound, his life is not in danger.
The Carabinieri's Survey Section also attended the scene of the attack to conduct technical inspections and collect ballistic evidence. The Nola Prosecutor's Office ordered the arrestee's transfer to Poggioreale prison, pending a validation hearing.
This incident once again highlights how old arguments, personal grudges, or neighborhood disputes can escalate into attempted murders. But, as with this morning's shooting, the response from law enforcement was immediate: the case was closed within hours, with the arrest of the man believed to be responsible for the wounding.
