Catania – A severe blow to organized crime was dealt overnight by a large-scale operation conducted by the State Police, which resulted in the execution of 14 precautionary prison orders against individuals accused of serious crimes, including mafia association, drug trafficking, extortion, illegal possession of weapons, receiving stolen goods, damage caused by arson, and unauthorized access to communication devices by inmates.
The crimes were allegedly committed to benefit the Scalisi clan, active in the Adrano area, in the province of Catania. The operation, coordinated by the Central Operations Service of the State Police and directed by the Catania District Anti-Mafia Directorate, involved the Flying Squads of Catania, Naples, Caserta, Taranto, Nuoro, Sassari, Udine, Pavia, Syracuse, and Chieti, as well as the Adrano and Caltagirone Police Stations.
The precautionary custody order, issued by the Preliminary Investigations Judge of Catania , is part of a broader investigation involving a total of over 30 individuals. According to what has emerged, the operation is a follow-up to a previous intervention by the Prosecutor's Office, which in recent days had ordered the arrest of 10 people linked to the same criminal organization.
The investigating judge also confirmed the latter's pre-trial detention at the conclusion of the validation hearing. The investigations revealed a well-structured criminal network operating along the Catania-Naples axis, primarily involved in drug trafficking but also in collateral crimes such as extortion and the illicit management of weapons.
Particularly serious is the accusation of having facilitated unauthorized communications by prisoners , an activity that highlights the clan's ability to maintain control even from within prison facilities.
The operation, the result of coordinated and comprehensive investigative work, sends a strong signal in the fight against organized crime, aiming to dismantle the networks that fuel drug trafficking and other illicit activities between Southern and Northern Italy.
Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigations to determine further responsibilities and connections within the Scalisi clan, confirming the institutions' commitment to fighting the mafia.
