Naples – Living in Campania means, on average, losing three years compared to those living in Trentino. This is the picture emerging from the Meridiano Sanità Report presented today in Rome, a detailed analysis of over 300 pages that captures the differences between Northern and Southern Italy in terms of health, prevention, and life expectancy.
According to the study, the average life expectancy in Campania It is 81,7 years, while in Trentino Alto Adige it is almost 85. Inequalities emerge above all for cardiovascular diseases, tumors, diabetes and respiratory diseases, with a mortality rate between the ages of 30 and 69 that is approximately 1,5 percentage points higher than in the North.
The economic factor plays a crucial role: with a per capita income of just over 20 thousand euros, the Campania records a lower life expectancy, while the northern provinces, with per capita GDP above 50 thousand euros, ensure significantly longer life expectancies.

The population's health status was calculated using six indicators, including infant mortality, prevalence of chronic diseases, and comorbidities. On a scale of 1 to 10, Campania scores 3,3, placing it third-to-last in Italy, behind only Calabria and Sicily. When socioeconomic and environmental factors are also considered, the region drops to last place with a score of 3,9.
The Report highlights how inequalities arise from a complex intertwining of economic, environmental, and healthcare access conditions. Social groups with lower incomes are more exposed to risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, or strenuous work, factors that increase the likelihood of developing chronic diseases and reduce life expectancy. According to experts, the snapshot painted by the Meridiano Sanità Report highlights the urgent need for targeted policies to reduce the gap between North and South by strengthening prevention, healthcare, and socioeconomic interventions.

The analysis of this report is very interesting, but I believe it doesn't take all factors into account. Health is influenced by many factors, not just income. Education and culture also play an important role.
