Caserta – A car stopped in the emergency lane of the A1 highway, near Caianello, aroused the suspicions of a Cassino Highway Police patrol. What seemed like a simple assistance operation turned into a high-speed manhunt.
When officers approached the vehicle, the driver—a lone man—suddenly restarted the engine and fled, racing desperately down the highway. A chase ensued for several kilometers, involving dangerous maneuvers, reckless overtaking, and attempted ramming of the Highway Patrol vehicle.
Despite repeated orders to stop, the man continued to flee, zigzagging between lanes and making every attempt to avoid the police cars.
The blockade in Caianello and the escape on foot
Only coordination with another patrol from the Caserta Nord Motorway Police Sub-section allowed the escape route to be closed and the vehicle to be stopped at the Caianello toll booth.
At that point, the driver abandoned the still-moving car and attempted a final, desperate escape on foot. He climbed onto the central New Jersey barrier in an attempt to cross the oncoming lane, but was caught and stopped by officers after a brief struggle.
Taken to the Caserta Nord Highway Police offices, the man was identified and searched along with the vehicle.

The discovery: 96 blocks of hashish weighing over 50 kilos
In the trunk of the car, the officers discovered 96 blocks of hashish of various sizes, heat-sealed and wrapped with duct tape, for a total weight of approximately 52 kilograms.
A shipment that, once released on the market, would have fetched hundreds of thousands of euros. The drugs were seized along with the vehicle used to transport them.
Arrest and prison
The man, taken to the police station for routine checks, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to sell narcotics and resisting arrest.
By order of the public prosecutor on duty at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspect was transferred to the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, pending validation of the arrest.
The operation was completed thanks to the synergy between the Cassino and Caserta Nord Highway Police patrols, who acted promptly, avoiding accidents and ensuring the safety of other motorists during the pursuit.
Investigations are continuing to determine the origin and final destination of the large quantity of drugs, which may be part of a trafficking channel from Southern to Central Italy.
