Castellabate — Moments of fear in the countryside of Santa Maria di Castellabate, in the heart of Cilento, where an 80-year-old man was attacked by a wild boar while picking olives with his family.
The incident occurred yesterday morning and had very serious consequences: the elderly man is now hospitalized in critical condition at the “San Luca” hospital in Vallo della Lucania.
According to initial reconstructions, the wild boar suddenly emerged from the vegetation, perhaps startled by the noise of the harvest, and attacked the man, stabbing him in the legs and abdomen. Family members who were with him on the farm attempted to scare the animal away and immediately assisted the eighty-year-old, who was losing profuse blood from the deep wounds he sustained.
Rushed to the Agropoli hospital, the man received initial treatment and was transferred to the Vallo della Lucania hospital in critical condition for a delicate surgical procedure.

The Carabinieri are currently investigating the incident to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the attack. It is believed that the wild boar, possibly an adult male, was in the area searching for food or was disturbed by sudden noises or movements.
The incident reignites controversy over the presence of wild boars in rural areas of Cilento, a problem long reported by farmers and local authorities. The animals, now numerous even near residential areas, pose a growing risk to public safety and agricultural activities, especially during the olive harvest.
This incident, once again, highlights the need for structural interventions to contain wildlife and prevent further potentially tragic incidents.
