Naples – An operation by the Carabinieri of the Naples NAS led to the seizure of over 21 tons of food and the closure of eight supermarkets in the province of Naples. But above all, it led to the discovery of shocking situations, such as the presence of insects and mice among the food on display and in storage.
The findings of an extensive inspection conducted last September paint an alarming picture of hygiene deficiencies, ignored safety procedures, and widespread pest infestation in food processing areas.
The numbers of the blitz
The operation, which targeted 30 commercial establishments, produced record numbers: over 21.000 kg of seized goods, administrative fines totaling €81.000, and a total value of the assets subject to administrative restrictions of nearly €1.5 million. The value of the seized goods alone is approximately €350.000.
Violations: from the "opaque supply chain" to rats in warehouses
The irregularities discovered by the specialized military were multiple and serious.

Anti-botulism samples and the health alert
Given the severity of the conditions, the NAS They wanted to further raise the alert level, especially in light of the recent cases of botulism reported in Italy. To prevent any risk to consumer health associated with the consumption of contaminated, adulterated, or adulterated foods, samples of oil, eggs, and canned vegetables were collected and analyzed.
The consequences for the businesses were immediate and severe: eight of them were closed by the authorities, paying for the seriousness of the violations discovered with suspension of operations. The operation by the Naples NAS (National Anti-Corruption Police) sends a stern warning regarding compliance with food safety regulations, a sector in which, as has been demonstrated, carelessness is unacceptable.

This article makes you think about how some supermarkets don't comply with hygiene regulations. It's incredible to think that food can be sold in these conditions. I hope more checks are carried out in the future.
