Naples – After years of interventions concentrated in the suburbs, the plan to improve energy efficiency in public lighting has finally reached the heart of Naples. The City has announced the start of the first works in the historic center, part of an overall project costing over €64 million, financed with European and municipal funds.

The ongoing work involves the "Litoranea" substation, which supplies electricity to the lighting system in the San Ferdinando and, in part, Chiaia neighborhoods. Specifically, the streets affected by the work are Via Carlo Poerio, Via Egiziaca a Pizzofalcone, Via Filangieri, Via Gennaro Serra, Via Giacomo Piscicelli, and Via Monte di Dio.

Within the next few weeks – according to a note from Palazzo San Giacomo – the redevelopment of the "Pergolella" and "Cavour" cabins will also begin, followed by other interventions to complete the modernization of the entire lighting network in the historic center.

The goal is twofold: to improve the quality of light and reduce energy consumption by replacing old lighting fixtures with high-efficiency LED systems.

"This is a long-awaited and priority project," the municipal administration emphasizes, "made possible thanks to a detailed dialogue with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Naples and the Municipality's Roads, Public Lighting, and Utilities Department."

The project, which began in 2017, has so far focused primarily on the city's outskirts, with the replacement of thousands of light fixtures and the upgrading of electrical substations. The plan is now entering its most delicate phase, involving areas of historical and architectural value, where all interventions must comply with landscape restrictions and criteria imposed by the Superintendency.

The investment is supported by funds from the EIB (European Investment Bank), resources from the JESSICA (Joint European Support for Sustainable Investment in City Areas) programme for sustainable urban development, funding from the POI – Infrastructure Operational Plan of the Ministry of Infrastructure, and municipal funds.

Once the work is completed, Naples will have a more modern, safe, and sustainable public lighting system, capable of reducing environmental impact and enhancing the beauty of its monumental heritage, even at night.
