Naples – Too many accidents, too many lives lost on construction sites and in the fields. Naples Attorney General Aldo Policastro has decided to intervene directly. He has called a meeting with regional representatives of trade unions and employers' organizations for Friday, October 17, at 3:30 PM at the Alessandro Criscuolo Courthouse to address the issues of workplace safety, gangmastering, and labor exploitation.
The meeting will also be attended by prosecutors from the Naples district, along with the deputy prosecutors general who make up the thematic working group established by Policastro himself. The goal is "to initiate a concrete discussion on the reality of subordinate employment, analyze critical issues, and identify operational solutions for more effective protection in the workplace, both in terms of safety and against forms of exploitation."
The Naples district—which also includes the provinces of Caserta, Avellino, and Benevento—is among the areas most affected by workplace accidents and forms of gangmastering, especially in agriculture, construction, and logistics.

Specifically, a permanent working group on safety, accidents, gangmastering, and labor exploitation has been established, coordinated by the Attorney General and the Solicitor General, with the support of two Deputy Attorneys General. The group will operate as a district observatory, in constant contact with the local Public Prosecutor's Offices.
The observatory will be tasked with disseminating best investigative and organizational practices, promoting dialogue with the courts and the legal profession, to improve the efficiency of the judicial response to work-related crimes.
This initiative comes at a critical time, following yet another series of accidents and deaths in Southern Italy. "Isolated reports are no longer enough," prosecutors explain. "We need a system that combines prevention, oversight, and criminal justice."

It's important that something be done about workplace safety, but I hope it's more than just a one-off meeting. Real action is needed, otherwise deaths and injuries will continue to rise unabated. Collaboration between institutions is essential to resolve this critical situation.
