Campobasso– "He confessed." With these dry words, pregnant with a horror that the community is struggling to digest, the prosecutor of Benevento, Gianfranco Scarfò, announced during the night the showdown of Salvatore Ocone, the 54-year-old accused of having committed a family massacre in Paupisi, in the Benevento area, killing his wife and 15-year-old son Cosimo and attempting to kill his 16-year-old daughter, Antonia Natale.
The dramatic, bloody day ended with a police arrest and a full confession, but a profound mystery still surrounds the reasons for the act.
After an hours-long manhunt, the man was captured in the countryside of Ferrazzano, in Molise, and taken to the Carabinieri barracks in Campobasso for questioning by Prosecutor Scarfò.
The night of truth and pain
"The Benevento Prosecutor's Office has arrested this individual for aggravated double homicide, attempted homicide, and kidnapping. He was questioned and confessed to the crimes."
Thus the visibly shaken prosecutor Scarfò summarized the outcome of the interrogation, which lasted about an hour and a half, before leaving the barracks in the dead of night.

The investigation, therefore, is only just beginning. The goal now is to reconstruct the motive for a crime that has shocked the small community of Paupisi and left a family devastated.
The victims and their daughter are in serious condition
As Ocone, following his interrogation, was transferred to Campobasso prison, the thoughts of the prosecutor and law enforcement turned to the sole survivor of the murderous rampage: Antonia Natalia, Ocone's sixteen-year-old daughter. The girl, seriously injured in the head, underwent delicate surgery at the Neuromed clinic in Pozzilli (Isernia). Her condition remains critical and she is currently hospitalized in intensive care, between life and death.
"I thank the Carabinieriof Benevento and Campobasso,” Scarfò concluded, “I hope their collaboration has been useful, especially for a person who is currently in hospital.” A touching reference to the young life hanging by a thread, a true living symbol of this tragedy.
The family and the community torn apart
Meanwhile, in Paupisi, the community is rallying around the survivors. Yesterday evening, the young victims' older brother, an adult who works in Rimini, arrived. He spent the night at his grandparents' house, the same place that until a few hours earlier was his family home and which today has become the scene of unspeakable grief.
The Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office has formally issued an arrest warrant for Ocone, served by the Carabinieri, accusing him of the crimes of aggravated double homicide (that of his wife and fifteen-year-old son), attempted homicide, and kidnapping. A series of unprecedented violence that now, despite his confession, still awaits an answer to the most agonizing question: "Why?"

This article is very sad and makes us reflect on how such horrible things can happen to a family. The community must support the survivors and understand the reasons behind such an extreme act, even if it is difficult.
