An operation by the Guardia di Finanza of Caserta dismantled a cigarette smuggling ring in the province of Naples, leading to the seizure of nearly a ton of illegal tobacco and the arrest of three people. The raid was launched after members of the Economic and Financial Police Unit intercepted a suspicious van on the streets of Somma Vesuviana, followed by a car that acted as a relay. Both vehicles, monitored until Napoli, were stopped: inside the van were 22 cases of cigarettes without the State Monopolies stamp.
The investigation, which continued with a search, led the finance police to a warehouse in Somma Vesuviana, where they found another 74 cases of cigarettes, some of which had already been loaded onto a second van ready for distribution.

The Guardia di Finanza's operation appears to be a notable success in combating cigarette smuggling, but questions remain as to how this trafficking can continue despite the active presence of law enforcement.
