Gennaro Piscopo, 48, originally from Arzano and a Start Romagna driver since 2008, was struck down on the ring road bridge while calling for help after an accident.
A senseless tragedy occurred during the night between Sunday and Monday in Forlì, along the stretch of the ring road between the Cava and San Benedetto districts, near the bridge over the Montone River.
The dynamics of the accident
According to the initial reconstruction by the Forlì Highway Police, the accident occurred shortly before midnight. The Ford Fiesta driven by Piscopo apparently suddenly struck the guardrail, perhaps due to a microsleep. The vehicle came to a stop in the fast lane.
Shortly afterward, a Citroën C5 with four people on board pulled over to provide assistance. The passengers got out to help the driver, who was still in shock but alive, out of the car.
While rescuers were trying to save him, a Skoda arrived and, not noticing the group of people standing on the road, hit them head-on.

Three of the four rescuers were injured, two seriously but not life-threatening. The driver of the Skoda, a 28-year-old, suffered minor injuries.
The arrest and the investigations
The young man driving the Skoda was arrested immediately on suspicion of vehicular homicide. The Prosecutor's Office ordered his release after initial investigations, while maintaining the investigative hypothesis of possible impaired driving. The investigation has been entrusted to the Forlì Highway Police, who are reconstructing every phase of the tragedy.
The impact site—an elevated section of the ring road with no escape route—made any attempt to escape impossible. The road was closed for several hours, from the Villanova roundabout to the San Benedetto junction, to allow for investigation and removal of the vehicles.
Pain and mourning
The news of Gennaro Piscopo's death has shocked colleagues and the management of Start Romagna. "Since 2008," a company statement reads, "Gennaro has worked with commitment and dedication, always serving citizens and road safety. On behalf of everyone at Start Romagna, we express our deepest condolences to his family and to all who knew him."
Piscopo was unmarried and had no children. He had moved from the South to Romagna over fifteen years ago, building a new life of work and responsibility. The same road he had traveled every day for work took his life one autumn night, a few meters from the Montone River. A fatality that left an entire community shocked.
