Cercola/Pollena Trocchia – The Carabinieri are cracking down on environmental crime on the slopes of Vesuvius. The Carabinieri successfully conducted a joint operation involving the Cercola Police Station, the Naples Forestry Corps, and the San Sebastiano al Vesuvio Park Corps. The operation resulted in the filing of charges against three individuals and the seizure of three businesses in the municipalities of Cercola and Pollena Trocchia.
Sewage and waste: the hotbed of illegality
Investigators focused their attention on two car washes and a mechanic's shop. Thorough inspections revealed serious violations of environmental regulations. The three workers—the de facto or legal owners of the businesses—were reported to the Judicial Authorities on charges of unauthorized discharge of industrial wastewater and illegal waste management.
Essentially, it is alleged that waste fluids from vehicle washes and mechanical processing were being disposed of illegally, potentially damaging the environment and the subsoil, in addition to the failure to properly manage the hazardous waste produced by these activities.

Seizures and economic bloodletting
The crackdown also had immediate economic and operational consequences. The three entrepreneurs were not only charged with criminal offences, but also faced administrative fines totaling nearly eight thousand euros, or €7.833 to be precise.
The most impactful measure, however, was the seizure of the businesses. The military's seals represent a severe blow to illegal activities and underscore the law enforcement's ongoing commitment to combating practices that threaten public health and the ecosystem in an already critical area like the Vesuvius area.
The operation is part of a broader plan to ensure environmental safety and legality, aimed at eradicating the pockets of illegal construction that continue to proliferate in the area.

It's important that the Carabinieri intervene in these situations of environmental illegality, but I wonder if the sanctions are sufficient to stop this behavior. Environmental protection must be a priority for all of us.
