Acerra – An operation to combat hunting crimes has led to the charges against three suspected poachers, caught red-handed while hunting using illegal methods.

The operation, conducted in recent days in the Acerra countryside, in the Frassitelli area, was carried out by the Carabinieri Forestry Unit of Marigliano with the essential support of the volunteer zookeepers of the LIPU (Italian League for the Protection of Birds) of Naples.

The three individuals, reported to the Judicial Authorities, were caught using sophisticated but illegal technical devices to increase their hunting haul. At the heart of the crime was the use of an electro-acoustic decoy: a device capable of artificially reproducing bird song through loudspeakers to deceive and thus easily gain the upper hand.

This practice is expressly prohibited by Law 157 of 1992, the law that regulates hunting in Italy, aimed at ensuring sustainable and fair hunting.

But the situation immediately became more serious.

In addition to the illegal means, the military found the concrete consequences of that poaching activity on site: four specimens of Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos), a protected bird, already shot and ready to be removed from their natural habitat.

In light of the irregularities discovered, the Carabinieri Forestali (Forest Police) have therefore taken several enforcement actions. In addition to reporting the three individuals to the competent prosecutor's office, the criminal instruments were preemptively seized: two rifles, the illegal electro-acoustic decoy, and the four thrush carcasses, the result of illegal hunting. The offenders were also fined over €800.

The intervention, as emphasized by the Carabinieri Forestali, is not an isolated case but part of a broader strategy. It is tangible evidence of the synergistic and ongoing collaboration between the Carabinieri—in this case, the Naples Forestry Corps Group and its peripheral branches—and environmental organizations. This alliance is crucial to effectively combating poaching, a criminal activity that threatens wildlife and the balance of local biodiversity.

Yes, I agree that it's necessary to follow the rules to protect wildlife. But sometimes there are also larger problems that aren't being addressed as they should be, such as increasing poaching.

I don't know if it's right to take these actions against poachers, but I think it's important to protect animals and nature. There are many laws, but not everyone always respects them.
