Camorra in the municipality of Santa Maria a Vico: a judicial earthquake rocks the Caserta municipality.
A large-scale operation, dubbed "Suessola," has been underway since dawn, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Marcianise Company. The officers are executing a precautionary detention order issued at the request of the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA), which alleges an illicit agreement between local administrators and organized crime.
Six people have been targeted by the measure: two prominent members of the Camorra "Massaro" clan have been sent to prison, while four administrators (or former administrators) of the Municipality of Santa Maria a Vico have been placed under house arrest. They are charged, in various capacities, with political-mafia election-rigging.
The pact for the 2020 elections
The investigation, described as the culmination of an in-depth investigation coordinated by the Naples DDA, focuses on the local elections held on September 20 and 21, 2020.
According to the investigation, the "Massaro" criminal gang, active in the area, provided direct and decisive electoral support to favor the election of the four administrators under investigation.

Votes in exchange for favors: the "do ut des"
The Camorra's support would not have been gratuitous. Investigators reconstructed how, once elected, the municipal administrators were required to repay the debt.
The two clan members, confident in their support at the polls, allegedly made specific requests to politicians. According to the prosecution, these demands aimed to obtain the issuance of administrative acts and "tailor-made" measures to benefit the clan's business. Investigations reveal that the involved administrators were fully willing to comply with these requests, effectively placing the municipal system at the service of organized crime, according to the prosecution's theory.
Today's operation casts a heavy shadow over the recent political and administrative history of the Caserta municipality, revealing an alleged connection between local politics and mafia interests.
