Ariano Irpino – A new, ingenious attempt to smuggle narcotics into the Ariano Irpino prison was foiled thanks to the quick thinking and intuition of the prison police. The incident, which occurred yesterday morning, led to the arrest of an inmate's sister.
The news was announced by Sorice Pellegrino Stefano, Head of the GAU Uilpa Penitentiary Police Secretariat of Ariano Irpino, who highlighted the effectiveness of the controls implemented in the Tricolle penitentiary.
The double bottom technique and the help of dog handlers
The woman, who had gone to prison to meet with her imprisoned brother, had with her a hard plastic bag containing essential supplies. But the apparent normality concealed a sophisticated ruse: the substances, presumably hashish and cocaine, had been cleverly hidden in the false bottom of the bag.
The elaborate concealment technique, however, did not escape the attention of the Penitentiary Police personnel, who operated with the crucial assistance of the canine unit from the Benevento Command.

Prisons as "marketplaces": the daily challenge
The Ariano Irpino incident refocuses attention on the ongoing and difficult battle against drug smuggling and trafficking in prisons, which often become veritable "closed-air drug markets." This challenge is made even more difficult by the overcrowding and staff shortages that plague the prison system.
However, the success of operations like yesterday's demonstrates that cooperation between the Penitentiary Police's investigative capabilities and the use of canine units is a decisive factor. Meticulous checks on inmates and visitors are playing a fundamental role in the fight against organized crime and its infiltration into Campania's prisons.
The Uilpa Penitentiary Police expressed its heartfelt congratulations to the Ariano Irpino Carabinieri officers in charge of interviews and to the Coordinating Inspector. Their "intuition and work," which have proven decisive on numerous occasions, confirm the professionalism of a force destined to resolutely continue this anti-corruption methodology.
