Castel Volturno - An unauthorized parking garage transformed into a small illegal landfill for hazardous waste. This is what the Carabinieri Forestali discovered during a joint operation in Castel Volturno, in the Pescopagano area, another piece of the puzzle of the waste emergency in what is sadly known as the "Land of Fires."

The operation, aimed at combating illegal dumping, involved the Castel Volturno Carabinieri Forestry Unit, the Vallo della Lucania (Salerno) Park Unit, and the Mondragone (Caserta) Territorial Unit. The target of the checks was a mechanical repair business, already under observation.

The workshop, lacking any permit, operated in a context of total environmental neglect. Piles of hazardous and non-hazardous waste were found inside and outside the facility, with a total estimated volume of approximately 11 cubic meters.

A dangerous and illegal mix of materials: mechanical parts, scrap metal, plastic, bulky waste, used oil containers, and car batteries. Everything was mixed together and abandoned without any safety precautions in two courtyard areas and even along the roadside, resulting in a clear environmental disaster.

The operator of the illegal business was therefore charged with the crime of unlawful management, mixing, and dumping of hazardous waste, a crime that seriously endangers the environment and public health. All the waste was seized for safe disposal.

The responsible person, an Italian, was reported at large to the judicial authorities and will face charges. The raid demonstrates the continued commitment of law enforcement to oversee the most critical areas of the Caserta province, where the illegal waste business continues to pose a social and environmental scourge.
