Naples – A tragedy that has moved an entire neighborhood and reignited the debate over the management of potentially dangerous dogs. Marek, the dog symbolizing Napoli's passion, known on social media for the famous photo of him wearing a Napoli scarf during the Scudetto celebrations, was attacked and killed by a pit bull in Marianella, on the northern outskirts of the city.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening near the mural dedicated to the musician Enzo Avitabile, an area popular with families and children. Marek's owner, Pasquale Festinese, recounted the scene, still in shock:
“I was walking Marek when, suddenly, a white pitbull with a spot on its neck appeared. He attacked with incredible violence: I tried to separate them, but there was nothing I could do. When he finally let go, Marek was no longer breathing. I rushed him to the emergency vet, but he was already dead.”
The owner filed a complaint with the Carabinieri and contacted MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, asking for full investigation into the incident and for the identification of the pitbull's owner, who was described as an animal frequently let loose near two local schools.

Borrelli, who relaunched the story on social media, spoke of "a tragedy waiting to happen" and called for immediate investigations:
Justice for Marek. Initial reports suggest that several dogs live near the scene of the tragedy, perhaps in precarious conditions. Urgent intervention by law enforcement and the Veterinary Health Authority is needed to prevent further tragedies. The lives of animals and the safety of citizens must be protected.
Marek's death has deeply shocked the Marianella neighborhood, where many residents say they have repeatedly reported the presence of aggressive dogs left unattended. Within hours, a wave of solidarity and remembrance for the "supporting dog" sprung up on social media, quickly becoming a small symbol of simple, genuine love for Napoli and the city.
The investigation launched by the authorities now aims to reconstruct exactly what happened and determine any liability on the part of the pitbull's owner. In the meantime, the anger and grief of those who, like Pasquale, have lost a lifelong companion remains, along with the unanimous cry of a community demanding only one thing: justice for Marek.

What happened to Marek, a beloved dog, is a terrible thing. I don't understand why people let their dogs roam free without supervision. Justice must be done.
