Paris – A turning point has been reached in the investigation into the sensational theft that rocked the Louvre Museum a week ago, raising fears of a security breach at one of the world's most important museums.

A swift police operation launched yesterday evening, Saturday 25 October, led to the arrest of two people believed to be involved in the robbery.

According to initial information released by the French newspaper Le Parisien, the two men are believed to be part of a gang of four criminals who stole nine precious jewels from the prestigious Apollo Gallery, boldly using a freight elevator to gain access.

Investigators, who had been keeping the two individuals, originally from Seine-Saint-Denis, the troubled northern suburb of Paris, under close surveillance for days, noticed that one of the suspects was about to leave the country.

The attempted escape abroad, apparently headed for Algeria, forced the police to act swiftly. The man was tailed and quietly arrested at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport. His alleged accomplice was subsequently tracked down and arrested, also in the Paris region.

The profiles of the two arrested men were immediately identified by the police: they are two criminals, already known to law enforcement for property crimes. Investigators believe they are not the instigators, but rather "expert thieves" and "contract thieves." This detail points the investigation toward a much more structured organization and a high-level client interested in the stolen unique pieces.

The two are now being held at the anti-crime brigade headquarters for routine questioning. In these sensitive cases, detention may be extended up to a maximum of 96 hours. Investigators' primary goal now is to get the detainees to talk in order to track down the gang's other two accomplices and, above all, identify the criminal organization, the alleged receivers, and, above all, the instigators.
