The protest stems from what happened in 2023, when during a previous European away match, groups of Eintracht fans were involved in violent clashes and acts of vandalism that devastated the center of Naples. Those serious incidents of hooliganism led to the Italian authorities' decision to ban the away match for the second leg of the group stage, scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, at 18:45 PM at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The suspension of Schengen
To ensure public order, the Interior Ministry has temporarily suspended Schengen access at border crossings. The measure, signed by Piantedosi, confirms the government's hard line and allows German fans without match tickets to be turned away at the border, preventing them from entering Italy.
The Frankfurt banner, therefore, is a venomous response to a security measure born out of the need to prevent a repeat of the same violence that profoundly affected the city two years ago. A provocation that, instead of calming spirits, risks only proving institutions' caution right.
