A tense evening, but no clashes, unfolded in downtown Eindhoven on the eve of the Champions League match between PSV and Napoli. About 180 Napoli fans were detained last night by Dutch police "to prevent disturbances," according to local authorities.
According to the ANP news agency, no actual incidents of violence or brawls occurred. A police spokesperson explained that the arrests were carried out "preventively," to prevent the situation from escalating. Furthermore, no contact was reported with PSV supporters.
The officials described the Azzurri fans as a "large group" who moved with a "certain atmosphere," a definition that alludes to a climate of growing tension.

Some of those detained, the PA reports, did not have tickets to attend the match. Four PSV fans were also detained in similar circumstances in other parts of the city.
Eindhoven's mayor, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, had already ordered the activation of a "high-risk security zone" ahead of the meeting, a measure that allows police to carry out preventive checks and searches in the city center and at sensitive points.
The Champions League match between PSV and Napoli, the third matchday of the group stage, will be played this evening amidst a climate of utmost vigilance by the Dutch authorities, determined to avoid any incidents of violence among fans.
