Castel Volturno – A surreal plot, worthy of a low-budget film, mixing family tensions, the misuse of social media, and a criminal offense.
A 44-year-old man, desperate to convince his partner to let him see their newborn daughter, staged his own kidnapping, filming the whole thing with an accomplice, and posting the video on a popular social media platform.
The charade, however, was short-lived: the Carabinieri of the Castel Volturno station unmasked the two impostors, reporting them for causing alarm and simulating a crime.
Those in trouble were a 44-year-old man of Serbian origin and a 19-year-old resident of Castel Volturno, both already known to law enforcement.
The alarm went off last night.

In the video, according to the police's reconstruction, the 19-year-old pretended to have kidnapped the 44-year-old. The video was specifically directed at the 44-year-old's family, but especially his partner, as a last-ditch attempt to apply emotional pressure to gain permission to see their daughter.
Believing the video to be authentic, the woman feared for her partner's life, and the report immediately triggered emergency procedures. The Carabinieri launched a thorough investigation and searches of the area to track down the alleged kidnapper and his abductors.
The truth, however, quickly emerged. Military investigations led to the location of the two fake perpetrators of the kidnapping. When cornered, the two confessed to the hoax.
Once the fictitious nature of the event was established and the entire clumsy scenario reconstructed, both perpetrators were reported to the judicial authorities. They will face serious charges of causing alarm, having needlessly mobilized the police, and of feigning a crime.
