The long-awaited will start on Monday 6 October “rooms of love” inside the prison “Two Palaces” of Padua. Located near the interview rooms, these rooms are an attempt to ensure privacy for inmates and their spouses, as reported Il Gazzettino.
The project, launched thanks to several volunteer associations in Padua, stems from a Constitutional Court ruling that struck down the section of Law 26 of July 1975 that prohibited prisoners from having conversations with their spouses without being monitored by prison staff.

The Political Resistance
Not everyone agrees with this initiative. The association “Narrow Horizons” Ornella Favero pushed for the trial to begin, but faced opposition from the Northern League's Undersecretary of Justice, Andrea Ostellari of Padua. Despite the resistance, the Ministry of Justice issued the regulations for prison directors, paving the way for this initiative.
Decision of the New Director
The new director of the penitentiary, Maria Gabriella Lusi, has thus decided to proceed with the opening of the rooms, granting a request from three inmates to the supervisory magistrate. The controversy is likely to continue, but the debate over what it truly means to uphold prisoners' rights is more lively than ever.

This initiative could bring benefits but also complications, as not all inmates are capable of managing such a situation. I hope it will be carefully monitored.
