Naples – ARPA Campania responded shortly after midnight to Ponticelli, where a violent fire engulfed an auto parts warehouse on Via Principe di Napoli late on Sunday evening, October 20th.
The flames, fueled by various materials—including plastic, paint, and mechanical components—released a dense column of smoke visible from much of the eastern outskirts of Naples.
At the request of the Prefecture, a team of technicians from the Territorial Area of the Naples Department of Arpa Campania intervened on site in collaboration with the Fire Brigade and representatives of the municipal administration.

To assess the environmental impact of the event, Arpac staff installed a high-flow air sampler approximately 150 meters from the depot. The aim is to determine the possible presence of dioxins and furans, highly toxic substances that can form during the combustion of chlorine-containing materials, such as plastics or solvents.
From the initial measurements from the nearest fixed monitoring stations – located on Via Argine (station NA09, just over a kilometer away), in Volla (via Filichito, approximately 3,8 km away) and near the Central Station (NA07, approximately 4,7 km away) – no exceedances of the legal limits for the main pollutants have been detected at this time, including fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene and xylene.
The results of the specific sampling for dioxins will be released in the coming days, once the laboratory tests are completed. Arpa Campania has announced that all official updates will be published on its institutional website, arpacampania.it.
Meanwhile, residents of the area, although no abnormal levels of pollution have been recorded, are advised as a precaution to limit direct exposure to the fumes and to keep their windows closed until the area has been completely reclaimed.
