Mercogliano – Their faces were covered by Carnival masks and their guns were pointed at the jewelry store owner when, on October 22, 2024, they broke into the heart of Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino.
Their plan was to pull off a quick robbery, but the courageous intervention of a local shopkeeper ruined everything: the bandits were forced to flee in a car driven by an accomplice.
Almost a year after that attack, officers from the Avellino Flying Squad arrested one of the robbers, a minor resident of the province of Naples, believed to be one of the perpetrators of the failed robbery.
The investigations and the preliminary investigations judge's order
The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Juvenile Court of Naples, allowed the reconstruction of the assault thanks to the analysis of surveillance camera footage, testimonies collected on the scene, and technical evidence of the movements of the getaway car.

The preliminary investigations judge issued a precautionary custody order against the young man, who was transferred to the Casal del Marmo juvenile detention center in Rome.
A violent and improvised plan
According to investigators, the gang had planned a quick attack, taking advantage of the quiet city center in the early afternoon. Armed and disguised, the robbers broke into the jewelry store, attempting to steal valuables and cash. However, the unexpected reaction of the neighboring shopkeeper and the quick thinking of those present foiled the attack.
Their escape wasn't enough to cover their tracks: thanks to a patient investigation, investigators gradually identified the participants, eventually arresting the first member of the group, while the search for their accomplices continues.

It was a very strange attack, and the shopkeeper's reaction was unexpected. I hope everyone involved is punished fairly, but I don't know if it's right to arrest a minor for this.
