A 57-year-old man from Monte di Procida decided to resume work on his illegal construction site, which had already been seized months ago by the Carabinieri and cordoned off with the classic red and white tape. When officers from the local station showed up at his home for a check, the man lost his temper: he pushed the Carabinieri and insulted them, trying to prevent them from entering the construction site.
The violent reaction cost him dearly. The police immediately stopped him and arrested him for resisting a public officer. After the usual formalities, the 57-year-old was placed under house arrest, but not in the same residence where the illegal construction was carried out. He is now awaiting trial.
The incident, which occurred in the small Phlegraean Fields municipality, has brought renewed attention to the issue of illegal building and the difficulty of enforcing seizure orders in areas subject to landscape restrictions. This man's defiant act transforms a building violation into a far more serious crime.
