Napoli – Gianni Punzo, the Neapolitan entrepreneur whose vision shaped the economy of Southern Italy, from logistics to football, to the high-speed train boom, has passed away at the age of 88.

A charismatic and innovative figure, Punzo passed away today after a life dedicated to ambitious projects that reshaped the Campania region's productive fabric. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Sunday, October 5, at 5:00 PM in the Regina del Rosario parish church, at Via Manzoni 225. Napoli

Born and raised in the beating heart of Neapolitan entrepreneurship, Punzo began his rise in the 70s with a brilliant intuition: the founding of the Centro Ingrosso Sicilia (CIS) in Nola, together with a group of textile operators. That commercial hub, which emerged as a key wholesale hub, became the first embryo of today's Interporto Campania, one of the main intermodal logistics facilities in Southern Italy.

Today, that complex – strengthened by its holding company Cisfi, founded in 1987 – represents a cornerstone for freight transport in the South, a model of efficiency that has generated thousands of jobs and attracted foreign investment. Not just business: Punzo has also left his mark in the world of sport. In the golden years of Napoli, under the presidency of Corrado Ferlaino, he held the role of vice-president, experiencing the epic of Diego Maradona and the two championships of 1987 and 1990.

“An unrepeatable era,” he himself defined it in past interviews, recalling how football was for him a catalyst of passion and social cohesion.

His legacy extends well beyond the region's borders. Among the founders of Banca Popolare di Sviluppo, Punzo was also one of the pioneers of NTV Spa, the consortium led by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo and Diego Della Valle that launched Italo, the second high-speed rail operator in Italy.

A visionary project, born to challenge the state monopoly and democratize fast travel, which revolutionized mobility in the country. Punzo had retired from the scene for several years, leaving the helm to new generations, but his name remains synonymous with boldness and foresight. The tributes pouring in from all sides are moving.

"With the passing of Gianni Punzo, we lose a visionary entrepreneur, a man who knew how to imagine and implement a development model for Campania and Southern Italy," said Fulvio Martusciello, regional secretary of Forza Italia in Campania.

The Nola CIS, the Interporto, the Vulcano Buono, and even Italo's extraordinary vision are all works that bear his signature and that changed the face of our region. He was a key figure in the economic rebirth of the South, an example of courage and innovation. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to his family, along with the entire Forza Italia party.

The funeral chapel will be open this afternoon in the same parish, where friends, colleagues, and institutions will pay tribute to a man who, with his business acumen and civic commitment, embodied the best of Southern Italian entrepreneurship. In a time of crisis and mistrust, Punzo's passing is a reminder: great transformations are born from courageous ideas, capable of pushing the boundaries of possibility.

I also believe his legacy is crucial, especially for young entrepreneurs who must learn from his successes and his mistakes. He's an example worth following, even if it's not easy.

Gianni Punzo's death is sad news for everyone. He did so much for the economy of Southern Italy and left a significant mark on the transportation and sports sectors. His vision changed many things.
