Naples – Tragedy struck overnight on Via Antonio De Curtis, in the northern part of Naples. A 64-year-old man died in the flames of his apartment after setting fire to his bedroom.
According to initial reports, the man—who suffered from mental health problems—initially started the fire, which engulfed the room within minutes and then spread to the rest of the house.
The alarm and the rescue
It was just after 2:00 a.m. when neighbors, frightened by the thick smoke and pungent smell of burning, called for help. The Fire Department, who extinguished the flames after a lengthy effort, arrived on the scene, along with patrols from the Office of General Prevention and Public Rescue and the San Carlo Arena Police Station.
Inside the house, rescuers found the man's lifeless body, lying in the room where the flames had broken out.
The investigations
Initial hypotheses suggest it was a voluntary act.

According to what has emerged, the 64-year-old had already attempted a similar act in the previous days: on that occasion, the prompt intervention of the Fire Brigade had prevented the worst and the man had been entrusted to the care of paramedics.
Despite this, he managed to return to his home, where the tragedy occurred during the night.
A life marked by discomfort
Investigators describe the incident as the painful epilogue to a tale of loneliness and mental fragility. Local residents describe a shy man, well-known but often isolated, who recently seemed "confused and agitated."
The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has now opened an investigation to determine any responsibilities or omissions in the healthcare and surveillance procedures following the first episode.
A silent drama, played out in a matter of minutes, which rekindles attention on the issue of mental distress and the prevention of risky situations in the city.
