Naples – Another night of violence in the city's ancient heart, in the Porta Capuana area, which has long been a hub for drug dealing, bivouacs, and clashes between groups of foreigners for control of drug hubs.
It was 1.50am when the police from the Naples Mobile Radio Unit intervened at the emergency room of the Vecchio Pellegrini hospital, where a man had been injured shortly before, in circumstances still unclear.
The injured man, a 52-year-old man originally from India and resident in Naples, immediately appeared to be very agitated and had a deep wound to his right thigh.
Attacked with a palm tree: the reconstruction
According to an initial summary reconstruction, still being examined by investigators, the man was found near Porta Capuana, in the vicinity of Piazza Enrico De Nicola, when he was surrounded by a group of people — currently unidentified — who, for no apparent reason, attacked him with parts of a palm tree, using them as improvised weapons.
The attack, which took place in an area already known to law enforcement as a hub for drug dealing by migrant groups, is said to have occurred in a matter of moments, under the eyes of several passersby, who, however, fled for fear of retaliation.
The man, after managing to call for help, was rescued and rushed to Pellegrini Hospital.

Deep wound and foreign body in the leg
Emergency room doctors found a penetrating wound with a foreign body – a sharp fragment of palm tree about five centimetres long – lodged in the right thigh.
The man was treated and discharged with a prognosis of 14 days, but the motive for the attack remains unclear, which could be linked to a settling of scores or a fight over trivial reasons.
Porta Capuana, a neighborhood trapped
The incident occurs in an increasingly critical context. Porta Capuana, historically the gateway to Naples' historic center, has been the scene of brawls, stabbings, and assaults for months, often linked to small-time drug dealing and the presence of foreign gangs competing for territory.
Local residents now speak of a "no man's land" where, after dark, decay and fear reign supreme. Law enforcement is stepping up patrols, but the widespread feeling is that tensions remain high.
Carabinieri officers from the Mobile Radio Unit and the Stella Company are combing through video surveillance cameras in the area to identify the attackers and determine whether this was an isolated incident or yet another sign of conflict between rival groups.
The most likely theory remains that of a clash between compatriots, but it cannot be ruled out that the victim may have been hit for interfering, even unintentionally, in illicit business in the area. A 52-year-old Indian man was injured.
