A 38-year-old Neapolitan man was arrested for stealing sacred objects and then attempting to extort €2000 from the nuns for their return. The crucial phone call came while the nun was at the police station filing a report.

Naples – He thought he was staging the perfect comeback, but his targets were more cunning than he. A 38-year-old Neapolitan man was arrested by the Flying Squad on charges of theft and extortion against the "Suore di Gesù Redentore" Institute.

His strategy – stealing and then offering to repay it at a high price – was shattered by the prompt action of a nun and the direction of the agents.

The story begins with a theft at the religious institution, where several sacred objects were stolen.

Shortly thereafter, the nuns began receiving calls from a man claiming to be in possession of the stolen goods and demanding €2000 for their return. Rather than give in to the blackmail, one of the nuns filed a complaint with the Naples Police Headquarters.

And it was during the conversation with the officers that the plan was put into motion. While the nun was in the police station, the decisive phone call came. Guided by the investigators, the woman managed to avoid arousing suspicion and arrange a meeting for the exchange: money in exchange for sacred objects. The agreed-upon location was Piazza Garibaldi.

Here, officers from the Flying Squad's "Falchi" section set up a cover while awaiting the other party. Shortly thereafter, the man appeared. The subsequent steps were swift and painstaking: a plainclothes police officer, posing as a friend of the nun, handed over the loot to the 38-year-old. As soon as he returned the stolen goods, he was stopped and arrested.

The sacred objects have now been returned to their original location, while the extortionist faces prison time. An ending that doesn't involve "returning horses."

The situation is truly strange and makes one wonder how people can stoop so low. It's incredible that someone could steal sacred objects and then think of extorting money. I hope justice takes its course.
