Naples - A scene of decay at the foot of one of Naples' most sacred symbols. While tourists flock to the Duomo to admire the Treasure of San Gennaro, a few meters away, a daily emergency unfolds, with permanent camps, piles of garbage, and troublesome drunks.
The latest cry of alarm comes from exasperated shopkeepers, with MP Borrelli launching a desperate appeal: "Let's save the historic heart of the city."
The photos and videos, collected around 6.30pm on an ordinary afternoon, show a scene that has now become normal in the area in front of the Cathedral: cardboard boxes, glass bottles, abandoned suitcases and piles of rubbish accumulating at the edges of the square.
A veritable permanent encampment that transforms the churchyard into an open-air landfill, with obvious risks to hygiene and safety.
The SOS was launched by a local shopkeeper, who sent the documentation to the Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli.

"It's unacceptable that one of Naples's most sacred and visited sites, its Cathedral, is held hostage by degradation and total anarchy," thunders Borrelli, commenting on the images. "These photos tell us of a beauty forced to wear an obscene dress, made of filth and potential violence. This isn't just about decorum, but about public safety and urban hygiene."
The MP announced that he will call for immediate and coordinated action: "We demand joint action that can no longer be postponed. ASIA must ensure extraordinary cleanup and daily cleanliness checks; law enforcement must monitor the area to put an end to drunken disorder and fights; social services must intervene to provide concrete and dignified solutions to those living on the streets."
A wounded symbol and a city in the balance
Naples Cathedral, custodian of the vials of San Gennaro's blood and a destination for pilgrims from around the world, is thus facing a crisis that goes far beyond mere urban decorum. The deterioration threatens to stifle the beauty of the historic center, threatening not only the city's image but the quality of life of those who work and live there.
Borrelli's appeal concludes with a request that sounds like a last hope: "Naples deserves respect, and its beating heart must return to its former glory." A warning that still awaits a concrete response, while the degradation continues to grow before everyone's eyes.
