Naples - A decisive crackdown on stadium violence. Naples Police Chief Maurizio Agricola has issued 10 DASPO (bans from attending sporting events) orders targeting fans involved in hooliganism during recent matches in the Naples province.

Seven two-year suspensions concern Napoli fans between the ages of 22 and 33. The seven were identified as those responsible for the disturbances that broke out during the Napoli-Cagliari match, played at the "Diego Armando Maradona" stadium. The charges against them include: climbing over barriers, acts of violence and threats towards other fans or law enforcement, and the illegal lighting of smoke bombs.

An eighth provision, also lasting two years, was issued against a 23-year-old already involved in similar incidents.

The young man had in fact already been reported for climbing during the previous Napoli-Pisa match.

The Juve Stabia-Cremonese case: the most severe penalties

The harshest measures targeted two Cremonese fans, aged 31 and 41, involved in serious incidents during the Juve Stabia-Cremonese match, played at the "Romeo Menti" stadium in Castellammare di Stabia. The Police Chief issued a ban on them for four and six years, respectively, following particularly serious "violent conduct prejudicial to public order and safety."

The prevention strategy

The wave of measures, which are part of the Naples Police Headquarters' broader prevention strategy, demonstrates the zero tolerance adopted towards fans who, abandoning fair play, transform the sporting ritual into an occasion for violence and illegality. The measures, set forth in Article 6 of Law 401/1989, aim to prevent future disturbances and ensure the safety of all spectators.

With this action, which brings to ten the number of fans "removed" from stadiums in a single fell swoop, the Naples Police Headquarters is sending a clear message: the fight against sports hooliganism is an absolute priority.

The Naples police commissioner's decision seems fair to me, but also a bit harsh, because I don't know if these measures alone are enough to stop violence in stadiums. Better fan education is also needed to prevent such incidents.
