Naples — He strikes and injures a person, then flees, heading to the port to catch a ferry and leave the city by sea. A crime-thriller-style escape for the cement mixer driver, a 53-year-old from Sassari, charged with failure to render aid after an accident on the Naples ring road last September 12th.
The crash and the escape
It all began on the afternoon of September 12th, on the ring road, near the Corso Malta exit. Suddenly, the cement mixer collided with a car. The impact injured a passenger, who was rescued and rushed to Cardarelli Hospital for treatment.
But instead of stopping to offer assistance and wait for help to arrive, the driver of the cement mixer made his choice: he fled. Ignoring the injured person, he left the scene of the accident and, according to reconstructions, headed directly towards the port of Naples.
The video chase
That same evening, the 53-year-old Sardinian boarded a ferry to Cagliari, perhaps believing he had evaded all responsibility.

Thanks to video surveillance footage from the ring road and port areas, investigators reconstructed the entire incident: from the collision to the escape, and finally boarding the ferry. This surveillance footage allowed them to identify and track down the fugitive.
The consequences: a report, a fine, and points deducted
The 53-year-old was subsequently charged with failure to provide assistance. But that's not all for him. In addition to the criminal complaint, he was also fined administratively and had 14 points deducted from his license, citing illegal overtaking and a dangerous maneuver that led to the crash.
A very high price for a few minutes of escape, which only worsened an already serious situation, transforming an accident into a legal case with far more serious consequences.
