Naples – A swift robbery in the heart of the city, amidst the bustling alleys and shops surviving the nightlife and the economic crisis. A robbery like many others, but foiled thanks to the prompt intervention of the State Police and the courage of the business owner.
The night ended with the arrest of a 45-year-old Neapolitan man, already known to law enforcement for several previous convictions, on charges of aggravated theft from a commercial establishment on Via San Giovanni Maggiore Pignatelli.
According to the reconstruction by officers from the Office of General Prevention and Public Aid, the thief entered the store taking advantage of a moment of distraction. Within moments, he snatched the cash register drawer, containing the day's takings, and attempted to escape.
But the owner, noticing the suspicious movement, chased him down the street, among passersby and tables of the still-open establishments, managing to subdue him after a brief struggle. In an attempt to flee, the 45-year-old apparently got rid of the loot, throwing it to the ground shortly before the police arrived. The stolen goods were recovered in full.
The report reached the Police Headquarters Operations Room around 23pm.

After interviewing the victim and verifying the incident, the officers arrested the man, who will now be submitted to the competent judicial authorities for evaluation.
The episode brings attention to the issue of petty crime in Naples' historic center, where tourists and residents coexist in stark contrast: on the one hand, the cultural and commercial revival, on the other, the small-scale predatory crimes that continue to undermine the safety of shopkeepers and residents.
In recent months, the State Police and the Carabinieri have intensified evening checks in the most sensitive neighborhoods – from the Decumani to Forcella – with foot patrols and targeted checkpoints, as part of the property crime prevention plan.
"We need a constant presence in the area," comment many local shopkeepers, who thank the officers for the effectiveness of their intervention, but also call for greater protection, especially during nighttime hours.
His arrest is part of a long series of operations that, in recent weeks, have led to the reporting or arrest of numerous individuals already known to law enforcement for thefts, robberies, and pickpocketing in the city center.

It's a good example of how the police can intervene quickly to stop thieves, but the security issue remains. More checks and protection are needed for shopkeepers and citizens in general, especially at night.
