Naples – The desperate screams of a woman, then a man, pierced the night in the Santa Lucia neighborhood, just steps from the seafront. That was the first alarm received by the 112 operations center: another domestic dispute that threatened to turn tragic.
When the Carabinieri of the Naples Mobile Radio Unit arrived on the scene, the scene had already degenerated. A 41-year-old man, Syrotiuk Yurii, a Ukrainian citizen born in 1984, had been arguing violently with his partner. Then, leaving the house, he smashed a window and threw a burning sweatshirt inside. A foolish act that could have had devastating consequences.
The woman, distraught but unharmed, was rescued by the police. The man was immediately arrested and taken to a holding cell: he will face charges of mistreatment and aggravated damage.
Domestic violence, an ongoing emergency
The Santa Lucia incident comes just hours after other bloody incidents that have shaken Campania, including femicides and attempted assaults, confirming a now tragic fact: violence against women continues to represent a real social emergency.
According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, in Italy in 2024, over 110 women lost their lives at the hands of men, mostly partners or ex-partners. And in the first months of 2025, the phenomenon shows no signs of abating: statistics already report dozens of victims, while reports of abuse and stalking are also on the rise.
The Naples case demonstrates once again how the spiral of domestic violence can degenerate into extreme acts, and how crucial it is to intervene promptly to protect victims.
In this case, the timely arrival of the Carabinieri prevented the worst, but the issue of preventative measures, psychological and social support for women who suffer abuse, and the need to strengthen safety nets remain unanswered.
Every episode, every news story, thus becomes a warning: behind the walls of our homes, too often, a drama unfolds that can no longer be considered merely "private."
