Benevento – The funerals of Elisa Polcino and little Cosimo Ocone, victims of the family massacre in Benevento, will be celebrated together next week. Paupisiwhich shook Sannio and the entire country.
The decision to hold a joint funeral, immediately after the autopsies, was made by Elisa's eldest son, Mario, along with other family members. For the occasion, Mayor Salvatore Coletta declared a day of mourning, so that the entire community can gather together to share the survivors' grief.
Meanwhile, a hearing was held in Campobasso prison to confirm the detention of Salvatore Ocone, 58, accused of killing his wife and son and leaving his other daughter, who is slowly recovering in the hospital, in a critical condition. Before investigating judge Silvia Lubrano, Ocone exercised his right to remain silent. The prosecutor's office has requested confirmation of his detention, while the judge's decision is expected in the next few hours.
The defense: "He is not lucid, he lives in a state of mental void."
Upon his release from prison, defense attorney Giovanni Santoro described a man incapable of realizing the tragedy he had wrought:
“He has no mental stability,” he explained, “he doesn’t ask questions, he just stares into space.

According to the lawyer, Ocone suffered from memory lapses and a pre-existing psychiatric condition, which may have affected his ability to understand and decide at the time of the massacre. For this reason, the defense has requested in-depth assessments of the man's mental condition.
A wounded community, a shaken Italy
The incident has sparked enormous outcry not only in Paupisi but throughout the country, bringing to the forefront the issue of domestic violence and femicide, which too often occurs within the home. The Sannio massacre, in fact, is part of a dramatic national context: in 2024, over 100 women were killed, many at the hands of their partners or family members.
