Genoa – The tragedy of the Morandi Bridge The case returns to the forefront of courtrooms with calls for very heavy sentences for former Autostrade executives. The Genoa Prosecutor's Office, led by prosecutors Walter Cotugno and Marco Airoldi, has requested 18 years and six months for Giovanni Castellucci, former CEO, charged with aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, forgery, and removal of safety devices. Other company executives face up to 15 years, while the requested sentence for a Spea technician is just over two years.

The prosecution focused in particular on the death of the youngest of the 43 victims, Samuele Robbiano, underlining the lack of intervention on the viaduct despite the critical issues having been known since 2009.

According to the prosecution, Castellucci put profit, personal prestige, and corporate interests ahead of the bridge's safety, delaying necessary repairs and creating a "climate of terror" within the company. “An encyclopedia of negative elements – the prosecutor remarked – which places Castellucci at the highest possible level of guilt. He was like Lord Voldemort: when writing about him, you used dots.”

The victims' relatives were satisfied and described the prosecution's closing argument as straightforward and clear: “The blindness to the problems of the bridge was evident – declared Egle Possetti, spokesperson for the Committee for the Remembrance of Victims Morandi Bridge - and the prosecutor highlighted the enormous responsibilities of the managers".

Castellucci's defense, represented by attorneys Guido Carlo Alleva and Giovanni Accinni, called the request "unacceptable and appalling," criticizing the assessments of the manager's personality included in the closing statement. After the prosecutor's statement, the civil parties will speak, followed by the defendants' defense. The verdict is expected no earlier than spring 2026.
