Naspoli– A broken leg that threatens to turn into a nightmare. This is the story of a young Neapolitan man admitted to Cardarelli Hospital after a car accident. According to his mother, he is now at risk of losing the limb due to alleged medical negligence and hospital-acquired infections.

The desperate woman wrote a long and detailed report to MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli (Alliance of the Greens and the Left), attaching medical documents and photographs that allegedly showed a serious injury to her son's leg, consistent—she claims—with an ongoing infection. The complaint was also sent to the Public Relations Office of the Cardarelli Hospital, requesting urgent intervention.

The reconstruction: from hospitalization to the suspicion of infection

According to the report, the boy was injured in a car accident on April 18, 2025, and was admitted the following day to the Orthopedics 1 department, Pavilion H at Cardarelli Hospital. There, he underwent surgery on his tibia and was discharged on August 1, 2025.

Already in the months following the operation, the mother reported the presence of an anomalous bacterial flora – “Proteus Mirabilis” – found in an external swab and subsequently confirmed at the hospital.

Worsening and new hospitalizations

After his discharge, however, the situation worsened. Due to the worsening condition of his wound, the young man was admitted to the CTO in Naples on August 20, 2025, and was then transferred back to the Cardarelli Hospital, to the same department where he had been operated on.

After about two months of treatment, the family was told that “the surgery hadn’t gone well” and that they would need to keep the braces on for another two years.

On October 6, the family decided to collect the medical records to evaluate other solutions, but only three days later – on October 9 – the boy was hospitalized again, in conditions that his mother described as “critical and without improvement.”

In a photograph attached to the complaint, a deep lesion is visible on the young man's leg, "a sign," his mother claims, "of rejection or an infection that was never treated properly."

The appeal and the request for clarity

“My son is at risk of losing his leg,” the woman wrote to Congressman Borrelli, asking that “someone see the situation and intervene immediately.”

The parliamentarian, known for his advocacy for public health in Campania and his fight against medical malpractice, immediately contacted the management of Cardarelli Hospital, asking for clarification on the case.

"This is a story we cannot ignore," Borrelli stated. "The desperation of a mother whose son is at risk of losing a limb after being hospitalized is a wake-up call that cannot fall on deaf ears. We demand immediate clarity from the Cardarelli Hospital and the Health Department. The clinical history must be accurately reconstructed and the reasons why a manageable injury degenerated into such a serious situation, with the suspicion of Proteus mirabilis infection and the admission that the first operation "did not go well."
You can't risk losing a leg like this. We will use every means to protect the boy and his family, seeking to determine any liability and ensuring he receives the necessary treatment immediately to save the limb."

Internal investigation coming soon

The MP announced that he will personally follow the matter and will submit a formal request for an internal investigation to determine any possible culpability in the patient's clinical history.

Meanwhile, the hospital is awaiting official clarification on the case's progress, while the young man's family remains awaiting concrete answers.
