The alleged perpetrator, who had been detained for about a month at the Nisida juvenile detention center, had been taken to the emergency room for illness related to the gunshot wounds he sustained during the incident.
The incident was reported by SAPPE, the independent union of Penitentiary Police.

The young inmate, bedridden and requiring constant care, is frequently transferred to the hospital for checkups, a situation that creates significant logistical challenges for Nisida staff. Donato Capece, secretary general of SAPPE, denounced the critical issues facing the juvenile prison system and the management of foreign inmates and those with psychiatric disabilities: "A serious analysis of what is happening in juvenile facilities is needed, because the warning signs have been there for too long."
