After more than half a century, Pozzuoli's Rione Terra is finally preparing for rebirth. An agreement has been signed, marking the beginning of the operational phase for the protection and enhancement of the ancient Phlegraean Fortress, closed for 55 years and a symbol of a city that has never stopped looking to its past as a promise for the future.
The agreement, signed by the Municipality of Pozzuoli together with the Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park, the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, the Campania Region, the Diocese of Pozzuoli, and the Port Authority of Naples, aims to define a shared strategy for the cultural and tourism revitalization of the site. It is the final step in a long administrative process that will lead, by the summer of 2026, to the definitive reopening of the Rione Terra.
The project involves the creation of a control room tasked with coordinating interventions and activities ranging from organizing visitor itineraries and thematic tours to promoting the "Rione Terra" brand, and collaborating with universities and research institutions.

“After 55 years we will see the light again, but this time in compliance with the rules and transparency”, commented the mayor of PozzuoliGigi Manzoni: "Three and a half years ago, we resumed a process that had been stalled for too long, regularizing documents and procedures. Today, we can say that everything is ready to give back to citizens a place of identity, which will become a driving force for culture and tourism."
Among the planned milestones is the announcement of the tender for the first lot in early 2026: a multi-building hotel with 87 rooms, two bars, a restaurant, and 15 artisan workshops. This will be followed by the second phase, with the construction of the conference center and spa, expected to be completed the following summer. With this signature, Pozzuoli takes a concrete step towards the rebirth of its oldest heart: the Rione Terra returns to being the symbol of a city that has chosen to proudly rebuild its roots.
