Ariano Irpino– Smoke, destruction, and cells locked from the inside. Chaos erupts in the Ariano Irpino prison, where a violent protest has been raging in one section of the penitentiary since last night. According to the Sappe prison police union, inmates in the ninth section "barricaded themselves inside their cells" and set fire to furniture, destroying everything within reach.
There are currently no injuries, but it does reveal extremely high tension, bordering on confrontation. The alarm was immediately raised at the Regional Penitentiary Administration Office, which ordered the urgent dispatch of reinforcements to contain the riot. Teams of officers were brought in from Avellino and other prisons in Campania to guard the facility and attempt to regain control of the burning unit.
But behind the spark of protest, as often happens, lies the fuse of a collapsing system.

This last figure, as SAPPE emphasizes, is only "on paper." Many sections of the prison are currently unusable or undergoing renovation, effectively forcing the inmate population to live crowded together in small spaces, exponentially increasing pressure and discontent. An explosive cocktail that dramatically erupted last night in Section Ninth.
The Ariano Irpino incident is not an isolated case, but rather part of a nationwide prison crisis, where violent protests have become a sign of structural distress and detention conditions reaching the limit of endurance. Meanwhile, prison police are on site to manage what promises to be a very long night, attempting to prevent the riot from spreading to other parts of the prison.
