They had become the nightmare of elderly Romans, capable of exploiting fear and trust to break into their victims' homes and empty their life savings. A 30-year-old Neapolitan and a 32-year-old Calabrian were arrested by Carabinieri officers from Rome's Porta Portese station on charges of aggravated fraud against elderly people. The 32-year-old Calabrian is accused of a fraud committed in Roma in November 2024, while the Neapolitan man faces charges for two similar incidents, which occurred between October 2023 and January 2024, as well as for residential burglary. The investigation, which began with the victims' complaints, allowed the Carabinieri to identify the perpetrators through analysis of phone records and video surveillance systems, documenting an illicit turnover of approximately 50 euros.
The two arrested, who were operating with other accomplices still being identified, are now under house arrest, one with an electronic bracelet, and the other in prison. Once again, scams targeting the elderly are proving to be one of the most hateful and widespread plagues, where criminal cunning preys on the vulnerability and loneliness of their victims.
