Salerno - An unusual spare tire cost a drug courier his freedom. The other afternoon, in the Salerno area, a joint traffic patrol conducted by traffic police officers from Angri and Eboli led to the arrest of a 49-year-old man, found in possession of over 5,6 kilograms of cleverly concealed hashish.
The operation was triggered during a routine check on a car driven by the 49-year-old. The operators' expert eye was immediately drawn to an anomalous detail: the vehicle's spare tire had different characteristics from the other tires and did not comply with the registration document.
Suspicious of this obvious irregularity, the officers proceeded to a more thorough inspection, which revealed the courier's singular and ingenious ruse: inside the wheel, well hidden, they found 56 blocks of hashish, weighing a total of more than 5,6 kilograms.

The man, who was traveling alone, was immediately arrested on charges of possession with intent to distribute narcotics. After the usual formalities, he was taken to the Fuorni prison, where he was placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Salerno.
The investigation doesn't end with the arrest. Further investigations are now underway to reconstruct the illicit trafficking chain: investigators are aiming to determine who the large quantity of drugs was destined for, who the suppliers were, and, most importantly, which criminal organization the arrested courier was operating for.
