Salerno - Thick black smoke has once again darkened the skies of Salerno. This morning, shortly before 9:00 a.m., a large fire broke out on Via Generale Clark, an area that residents have long complained has been transformed into an open-air landfill.
According to initial reports, the fire started from a pile of illegally dumped materials—including discarded furniture and all kinds of waste—in a green space that had become a site of illegal dumping. The acrid smell of burning plastic and rubber spread throughout the neighborhood, alarming residents.
Firefighters from the Salerno Fire Brigade responded immediately to the scene, drawn by numerous emergency calls to the 115 emergency number. Given the extent of the fire and the significant amount of combustible material, firefighters had to request the assistance of a water tanker to ensure the necessary water supply for extinguishing operations.
The flames were extinguished after about an hour of work, but the ground now contains a patch of ash and partially destroyed materials.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated one in the Salerno area, where illegal landfill continues to pose an environmental and urban decency emergency. In recent weeks, similar fires have occurred in peripheral areas of the city.
"It's become a jungle here," a local resident says bitterly. "Every day we find new bags, appliances, furniture. We've reported the situation several times, but nothing's changing. Today everything went up in flames, tomorrow who knows."
The incident has refocused attention on the phenomenon of illegal waste disposal, with local governments often struggling to address a problem that threatens public health and the liveability of neighborhoods. The relevant authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire and the resulting degradation.

It's truly worrying that such a serious situation continues to persist in Salerno. I don't understand how the authorities aren't taking more effective measures to stop this phenomenon of illegal landfills and fires.
