Salerno – A successful anti-smuggling operation for the Salerno Financial Police. Officers from the Provincial Command seized a tanker truck carrying a large load of contraband fuel, evading excise duty.
The operation, conducted by the Nocera Inferiore Guardia di Finanza as part of their territorial control operations, intercepted the heavy vehicle at a strategic point: the Castel San Giorgio motorway toll booth.
The cargo and tax fraud
An inspection of the tanker revealed the illicit nature of the transport: on board were a total of over 12 liters of petroleum products: 8.000 liters of diesel fuel and 4.200 liters of unleaded gasoline.
The driver of the tanker, an Italian citizen with a criminal record and an employee of a transport company in the Neapolitan hinterland (which also owned the vehicle), was found to be without the required accompanying documents for transporting fuel.

The lack of documentation immediately raised the possibility of smuggling excisable energy products. The estimated tax evasion, if the shipment had been placed on the black market, would amount to over 8 euros in lost revenue for the state coffers.
Report and seizure
Consequently, the finance police seized the entire tanker and the mineral oils it was carrying. The driver was reported to the Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office for the crimes of evading excise duty on energy products and illegal circulation of excisable products.
The operation highlights the persistent phenomenon of fuel smuggling, a fraud that not only damages the treasury but also fuels unfair competition and organized crime.

This operation by the Guardia di Finanza was very important in stopping smuggling, but I wonder if there are other ways to prevent these acts. Territorial control must be more efficient.
