Naples – A crackdown on widespread lawlessness: Carabinieri from the Scampia station descended on the heart of the Vele neighborhood and cracked down on a ghost business, transforming an illegal fishmonger's shop into a prime example of urban decay.
The owner, a 57-year-old Neapolitan, was reported for illegal operation and serious structural violations. The operation, part of an extraordinary enforcement operation in the neighborhood symbolizing the Camorra and its uncertain rebirth, led to the seizure of 100 kilos of untraceable merchandise and a total fine of €70.
The fishmonger's shop on Via Marrazzo, a narrow alley between gray buildings, has been officially closed: a blow to the soft underbelly of the underground economy that still plagues Scampia.
The inspection, conducted this morning by military personnel led by Captain Angelo Esposito, revealed a veritable urban "monster." The business, lacking municipal and health permits, housed illegal construction: haphazardly erected walls, uneven floors, and an electrical system connected directly to the public grid, without meters or protection.
The ASL Napoli 1 Centro, alerted to the scene, certified the premises as unsuitable: sky-high humidity, lack of ventilation, and a rusty refrigerator that held 100 kilos of fish and shellfish under seal.

The operation is part of the "Safe Sails" plan, launched last June by the Prefecture of Naples, which has already led to 150 reports and 50 closures of irregular businesses in the area. The net is widening: from fake license plates to "phantom" reports, the neighborhood is under attack. The service didn't stop at the fishmonger's.
The Carabinieri have expanded their patrols to a two-kilometer radius, targeting other local problems. A 57-year-old local man was reported for using counterfeit license plates on a cargo van: "A ploy to evade road tax and insurance, but also to move illicit goods," investigators suspect, not ruling out ties to money laundering.
Not far away, a 40-year-old man got into trouble for feigning a crime: he had reported a non-existent car theft to collect the insurance, an old trick but always effective in low-income neighborhoods.
On the drug addiction front, two young men—both under 25, one student and the other unemployed—were reported to the Prefecture as drug users. They were caught with quantities of hashish and marijuana in the Vele gardens, and now face the suspension of their licenses and documents.
