The seafront of Salerno, one of the city's iconic landmarks, is back in the news. A man was arrested by the State Police for drug dealing and resisting a public officer after being caught on Via Lungomare Trieste, within the pedestrian area. The operation was triggered by an anonymous tip indicating the presence of a frequent drug dealer among the passersby.

The officers, arriving on the scene, identified the man — a non-EU citizen — sitting on a bench.

At the sight of the patrol, he attempted to remain calm, but a personal search revealed otherwise: he had on him a small bag containing approximately two grams of marijuana, a 30-gram piece of hashish, and €1280 in banknotes of various denominations, believed to be the proceeds of drug dealing.

Taken to the police station for questioning, the man lost control and attacked the officers, being immediately subdued. He was arrested on charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and resisting arrest. The incident refocuses attention on an area often plagued by petty crime, despite its tourist appeal and the daily presence of families and young people.

It's truly sad that places like Salerno's seafront become the scene of violence and drug dealing. Police presence is essential to ensure safety, but it's also important to educate young people about drugs and crime.
