Giugliano– A "beautiful day capable of projecting us into the future" and, above all, a "very first step towards protecting citizens' health." These were the words of the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, speaking this morning in Giugliano in Campania, at I Gelsi, to celebrate the remediation of an area that has become a symbol of environmental degradation in the infamous Land of Fires.
The operation was conducted by the Commissioner for Remediation, led by General Giuseppe Vadalà, who in just a few weeks managed to remove approximately 33 tons of waste that had been abandoned for years along a farm road.
The Prefect of Bari emphasized that the operation represents a "significant step change," further accelerated by the recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The thanks were extended to several institutional levels:
Government: For the intervention and the new regulations that have provided "very effective tools."
Commissioner's Office (Gen. Vadalà): For the speed and efficiency with which "tens and tens of tons of waste" were removed.
Region: For the funds allocated for reclamation activities.
Law Enforcement and Army: For continuous control of the territory.
Special thanks went to the Citizens' Committees, whose "repeated requests and complaints" have fostered the creation of that "great institutional synergy that is bringing important results."

After the successful removal, the real challenge, as underlined by the Prefect, is to ensure that the area does not return to being an illegal landfill.
"The area must remain as we left it today," Di Bari reiterated. To achieve this goal, the control action will be based on a dual track:
Constant monitoring of the police forces on the territory.
Advanced technological action through:
The establishment of a control room at the Carabinieri Forestali.
The availability of detailed mapping of the entire territory and existing businesses provided by Agea (Agency for Agricultural Payments), a database considered "very useful" for monitoring and preventing further abandonment.
The goal is to transform a symbol of devastation into a model of legality and environmental protection.

The article is interesting, but there's still much to be done to solve the pollution problem. It's important that institutions continue to work together to prevent these areas from returning to the neglect they once were.
